Jean-Baptiste comte du Barry, son of Antoine Dubarry, captain in the regiment of Isle-de-France, married in 1722 to Marguerite-Catherine-Cécile Thérèse de La Caze. He was the lover of Jeanne Bécu, who became the Countess du Barry; he made her marry his brother Count Guillaume Dubarry so that she would become the mistress of Louis XV. As a reward for his mediation, he received the county of L'Isle-Jourdain and considerable settlements in eastern Gascony.
