Vincent Sellaer was a Flemish Renaissance painter known for his mythological and religious subjects. His works stand out through their monumentality of form and their mixing of Italian and northern styles.
Saint Jerome is often depicted in his study surrounded by books and the equipment of a scholar, as can be seen in this painting. He is also often depicted in connection with the vanitas motif, to which the suggestion of a skull on his lap may refer to.
