While contemplating the sufferings of the Lord during the feast of the exaltation of the Holy Cross, St. Francis of Assisi saw a seraphim descend from heaven in the form of a crucified man, tied to a cross. This celestial Spirit wore six wings of fire, two of which covered the body.
