This canvas is a study for a monumental painting by Morelli Sanchez-Gil from 1897. It depicts the battle of Trevino, which is held by the Cavalry Academy in Valladolid.

An officer in the Civil Guard and a painter specializing in military themes, the artist's career was primarily military.
While stationed in Barcelona, he studied drawing and painting in the studio of José Serra Porsón. When he was sent to Madrid, he continued his studies at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, forming part of the group of copyists at the Museo Nacional del Prado.

His paintings can be find in several Spanish museums such as the Prado Museum, the Cavalry Academy of Valladolid, the Intendancy Museum of Ávila, the Army Museum and the Regional Military Museum of A Coruña.
