Christ on the cold alabaster stone, Burgundian-Flemish territories, 16th century.
The figure of Christ seated on a mound covered with a drapery at the end of his ascent of Golgotha ??does not appear in the Bible. This episode of the Passion appears in the Middle Ages to respond to the need for humanization of the divine figure; in 15th century treatises on the passion, the rest on the cold stone takes place after the ascent to Golgotha ??and the stripping of Christ and before the crucifixion. Christ sits on the stone, awaits his execution and contemplates his life, pensive.
This iconography was widely disseminated in sculpture between the end of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the Burgundian-Flemish territories.
Christ is represented seated, his head slightly bowed and turned to the right, awaiting his execution. His face expresses resignation and dejection in contrast to his bare torso with Michelangesque musculature. Moreover, in sculpture many Flemish and Burgundian artists are marked by the influence of the Italian Renaissance.
The use of alabaster in sculptures in the round is quite rare, wood has often been used.
