Joan of Arc in prayer, presented in armor, the helmet and her sword placed on the ground. Hands clasped together, the face expressing a deep recollection, this work by Antonin Mercié is probably one of the most beautiful representations of our national heroine. Produced in regulation (metal alloy) and bronze accessories (sword handle and stirrups) of precision and finesse of details it results in a piece of strong character. A base in cherry red marble with a cartouche specifying the date of exhibition at the Salon, a similar model is present at the Jeanne d'Arc Museum in Vaucouleurs.
Very nice general condition, wear in the patina in accordance with its age, restorations not very visible on the sword.
The height indicated includes the marble base.
Antonin Mercié was born in Toulouse in 1845, a pupil of Jouffroy and Falguière at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he obtained a First Prize of Rome at the age of 23 with Theseus and the Minotaur. Showing a certain talent for patriotic subjects, he responded to important commissions for monumental works and funerary monuments. In 1913 he was elected president of the Society of French Artists.
