Representation of the "Malade Imaginaire", 18th century

Rare representation of the "Malade Imaginaire" realized in the Régence period. As in the theater, the characters enter on the garden side, here the joyful and positive apothecaries. On the courtyard side the characters are static, it is the side of betrayal and low masses, the negative side. The large stage curtain on the right confirms that we are indeed in the theater facing the last work of Molière. This large oil on canvas was originally probably taken from the woodwork and framed in gilded wood in the early 19th century.
Languedoc, circa 1720 - 1730.
Dimensions frame 82cm X 100 cm
canvas 74 X 92 cm.
