Germany, Ulm School, entourage of Michel Erhart.
Ulm, a German city in southwestern Germany, was a center of art during the late Gothic period where a large number of sculptors and painters were gathered. Its influence marked southern Germany as well as Tyrol and Graubünden in Switzerland from the 14th to the 16th century.
Our Angel Gabriel was most likely one of the two basic elements of the Annunciation in an altarpiece. The original polychromy has been preserved in its entirety except for the blue of his tunic and the burgundy of his cothurns, which cover the old polychromy still existing.
The white skin shows a network of fine cracks typical of this period.
The base on which our sculpture is fixed is later.
