Catalogue Note
The painting shows the interior of the Jupiter Hall at the Pitti Palace in Florence at the end of the 19th century. Italian artist Santi Corsi was a regular visitor. His workshop at Lungarno Serristori was only a 15-minute walk away. He specialized in painting the Palatine Gallery, documenting the masterpieces displayed and collected over the centuries by the Medici family and the Habsburg-Lorraine family.
Santi Corsi chose a subject steeped in history. The Pitti Palace retains to this day the name of its first owner the banker Buonaccorso Pitti from whom Eleanor of Toledo bought it in 1550. The sumptuous painted and sculpted decoration dated from the embellishment and expansion of the residence by her husband the Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici and continued by his successors. Bathed in light, the Jupiter Room is located on the first floor of the Pitti Palace. Its name comes from the theme of the ceiling paintings masterfully executed by Pietro da Cortona between 1642 and 1644. The ceiling frescoes in the rooms of the palace represent the five virtues attributed to Grand Duke. The Jupiter Room personifies triumphant royal majesty and crowned merit. It was used by the Medici as the throne room where grand audiences were grant. The three frescoes located in the large entablature of the ceiling vault - that we see in the painting - show the gods of Olympus supporting the Grand Duke’s educational journey from his youth to old age.

On the left, Mars in armor with shield flies away on a winged horse. The detail of the fresco is known from an engraving in a reverse direction by Charles Delahaye.


In the center of the next lunette seated at his forge Vulcan stops manufacturing weapons, surrounded by two Cyclops to the left. The composition is known by an engraving in the reverse direction by Cornelis Bloemaert.

The last fresco visible on the right of the painting depicts Apollo as a Young nude male holding the lyre in left hand developing a taste for Fine Arts.

Approximatively a century separates Santi Corsi’s painting from the opening to the public of the collection bequeathed by the last heiress of the Medici family to the city of Florence at the beginning of the 19th century. The Hall of Jupiter was the fourth room of the Gallery of the Palace.
Santi Corsi painted the windows’s screens that dimmed the light to allow visitors to admire the paintings of the great Renaissance masters. The display of the paintings covers the entire surface of the wall opening towards the Saturn room. From top to bottom, starting from the left, we first identify the Portrait of Alfonso I d’Este currently attributed to Sebastiano Filippi or Bastianino, as a copy of a portrait painted by
Titian. The three-quarter-length portrait, depicts the model leaning on a cannon placed to its right. It thus shows the Duke of Ferrara, Modena and
Reggio in his position of commander-in-chief.

Below this famous portrait appears The Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist by Rubens. Saints John the Baptist and Elizabeth came to worship the infant Jesus in his wicker cradle. Mary wraps her arms around the two children under the protective and tender gaze of Joseph. The painting was, for a time, part of the collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, following Napoleon’s spoliations in Italy, and found its place back in the Pitti Palace in 1816.

For a long time, La Bella was seen as the portrait of Titian’s lover. She embodies the ideal of feminine beauty developed during the Renaissance. The three-quarter-length portrait details the luxurious dress of the model in blue damask fabric and gold embroidery, with crimson cut-out sleeves revealing the shirt, not to mention the fur wrapped around her wrist. Titian painted with the same attention the harmonious face of the young woman and the intricate tangle of her honey-colored braids.


If Santi Corsi obtained permission to reproduce the paintings exhibited in the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace - as confirmed by the wax seal on the reverse of the canvas - the archives of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence do not contain any biographical information about the artist. The important visibility of Santi Corsi’s paintings on the art market testifies to the growing enthusiasm for exceptional views of cultural heritage sites and foretell the future rediscovery of the artist and his work.
