Early 19th century
Dimensions : H. 78cm x D. 63,5cm
A pair of four-light chased bronze candelabras, patinated and gilded, on a white marble base itself decorated with gilded bronzes. The female figures called "bacchantes" are in patinated bronze; these bacchantes carry a four-light bouquet with vegetal scrolls. The base is decorated with garlands of vines and a beautiful frieze. The superb gilding is original, slightly more worn on the bases than on the lights. These candelabras have been reassembled with modern threads probably during the 20th century, which gives them an excellent stability, especially for the lights.
This classic model was produced in multiple copies from the end of the 18th century but also during the beginning of the 19th century in response to a demand from customers faithful to the taste of the "ancien régime". The exceptional character of the examples that can be found is very variable, and depends essentially on the level of chasing and the quality of the gilding. On these candelabras, the chasing work is particularly remarkable and the gilding with mercury is still very fresh.
