Antonio Selvi (1679-1753) - Portrait of Averardo de Medici (1320-1363)

Antonio Selvi (1679-1753) was a gifted associate of Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi and primarily known as a maker of relief works. He made a celebrated series of medals that commemorated the Medici family and this particularly subtle portrait commemorates Averardo de Medici (1320-1363) who was the father of the founder of the Medici Bank who came to create the Medici art patronage dynasty. The reverse illustrates a parable with a goose and a dog reminiscent of Cellini's naturalistic study of a greyhound in the Bargello.
