The compact tableau-like composition of figures and tender emotion seen here is reflective of the most refined late Medieval sculpture and is datable to circa 1350 likely carved by a capable sculptor in Germany.
The sculptor has conflated the Pieta composition with Christ on Mary's lap-yet uniquely here Mary sits on her Sedes Sapientiae throne of wisdom where she had held him as a child. The figure on her left is still poignantly removing Christ's arm from the cross so it is also in subject a Descent from the Cross.
