Masanao – A Japanese Fukura Suzume

An ivory sparrow with horn eyes.

Exceptional for size and quality finely sculpted in the lower part with the paws engraved and worked with himotoshi in the center that ends under the tail.

The netsuke is associated with several legends and stories among which, that of “The sparrow with the cut tongue” (? ? ? ?, “Shitakiri Suzume”) is a legend of Japanese folklore that tells the story of a courteous man, of his greedy wife and an injured sparrow.

And of Fukura suzume which literally means “swollen sparrow” like the fugu fish. Its meaning as a symbol of happiness is based on the namesake “fuku”, which means both happiness and swelling.

Masanao Kyoto school signature within oval reserve on the side.

Edo mid 18th century

Sizes: 2 x 5 x 3,5 cm.
