Napoleon Bonaparte on the bridge of Arcole
Bronze
H. 68 ; L. 56 ; Thickness : 25 cm

Important SCENE in bronze with black patina signed " E. de Labroue Fbt ". It is animated by five men around a sixth: Napoleon Bonaparte. These six soldiers are standing on a bridge to symbolize the battle of the Arcole Bridge. It took place between November 15 and 17, 1796 during the first Italian campaign.

The precise episode of which the bronze is an illustration is recounted as follows by Joseph Sulkowski, a Polish officer and aristocrat, in Marcel Reinhard's book Avec Bonaparte en Italie, based on the unpublished letters of his aide-de-camp Joseph Sulkowski: "In the meantime, the general-in-chief, informed of the state of affairs, had already advanced halfway to the battlefield: he was told of the irreparable losses that had just been suffered, of the obstinacy of the enemy, and of the despondency of our soldiers. The battle was engaged, it was necessary to win or perish, and he took a side worthy of his glory. Suddenly we see him appear on the dike, surrounded by his staff and followed by his guides, he gets off his horse, draws his saber, takes a flag and rushes on the bridge in the middle of a rain of fire. The soldiers see him and none of them imitate him."
On marble base.
