Rare pair of sconces in chiseled and gilded bronze.
The plates in the form of asymmetrical acanthus leaves, support two sconces treated "in a whiplash and support cups and bobeches with plant decoration.
Good condition, beautiful mercury gilding.
The two plates, certain branches and bobeches engraved with the crowned “C”. *
French work from the Louis XV period circa 1745-1749
Height: 37 cm; Width: 25 cm
* The crowned C punch is a mark affixed to all bronze works between March 1745 and February 1749.
This is a tax to finance the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748).
Our opinion :
The pair of wall lights that we are presenting has a still very marked Regency style, but the asymmetrical rocaille and the natural decoration of the arms which imitate two branches supporting the buds, is characteristic of the nascent Louis XV style.
The crowned “C” mark allows us to date our pieces precisely to the period 1745/1749.
The rigor and the strict application of this mark (small "c" on the branches and bobeches and large "C" clearly visible on the plates) are also typical of the productions carried out just after the promulgation of this new tax.
