Pair of Flower Vases Karel Van Vogelaer ( 1653 - 1695 )

Pair of oil paintings on canvas measuring 73 x 60 cm without frame and 95 x 75 cm with wonderful frame by the painter Karel Van Vogelaer known as Carlo dei Fiori or Distelbloem (Maastricht 1653 - Rome 1695).

The two paintings framed in Roman Salvator Rosa frames adorned with an elegant phytomorphic fastigium refer to the Roman decade of the Dutch painter Karel Van Vogelaer, who arrived in Rome in 1674.

Our author composed two calibrated plant triumphs, crossed by a lively heartbeat of spring life: white and pink roses, carnations, velvet flowers (amaranths), perch and pomegranate flowers, double anemones and poppies, sunflowers and convolvils dance like real characters to the rhythm of a harmonious choreography.

The type of the bouquet arranged in an embossed vase with the grooved foot resting on a stone table scratched by time is a recurring formula in the painter's artistic career as can be seen from the book by Y. Primarosa Karel Van Vogelaer a florist from Maastricht in Baroque Rome Rome 2012, pp. 30 and 53.

The main features of the works are these vegetal microcosms with the bright chromatism of the carnations and quivering anemones, the jagged corollas of the double poppies and the description of the velvety leaves and petals of the roses wet with dew.

Creator of a fortunate and original synthesis between the rigorous and dazzling fortune of Nordic origin and the looser Baroque compositional vigor, Van Vogelaer painted some of his best paintings in the pontifical capital collaborating on an equal footing with painters such as Franz Werner Van Tamm.

Elegant and sumptuous the paintings of our painter won the admiration of refined patrons and collectors, celebrating a luxuriant and miraculously vital nature, capable of hiding that sense of transience, passion and vanitas that had always animated the floral genre until then.
