Geisha playing the Shamisen - Albert reimann (1874 - 1976)

Signed 'A. Reimann fec.' sideways on the stand, verso with the foundry stamp 'Gladenbeck's Bronzegiesserei G.m.b.H'

The shamisen ("three scented strings") is a traditional plucked string musical instrument used in Japanese music. It is a long-necked lute with a smooth fingerboard.

The shamisen is played on the knees by plucking the strings with a large ivory plectrum.

It is used with vocals in popular songs and as a solo or ensemble instrument.

It became the instrument of choice for geishas.
