Large Carrara marble sculpture representing a Pomona, Italy, 17th century.
Pomone or Pomona, nymph of remarkable beauty, is the divinity of fruits. She hates wild nature and prefers carefully tended gardens. No nymph knew like her the art of cultivating gardens and especially fruit trees.
She was usually represented holding in her hands a cornucopia or a basket filled with fruit.
Our sculpture was probably born to adorn a beautiful 17th century garden but its state of preservation makes us understand that it was moved inside to prevent bad weather from altering its beauty. Dressed in an old-fashioned tunic, she wears her hair adorned with a tiara and a small fruit basket in her hand.
