Bust of Sabine Houdon at the age of 4 years, terracotta late 18th century

Jean Antoine Houdon 1741 - 1828

Terracotta sculpture on a molded pedestal in violet marble "Peach Blossom". Signed Houdon
Exhibited at the Salon of 1793, the plaster bust is now kept in the Louvre Museum.
This bust of Sabine, at the age of 4, the artist's eldest daughter, is undoubtedly one of the most famous, along with the one in the Louvre where she is represented at the age of 10 months.
The freshness and spontaneity of expression make it one of the most successful representations of childhood in the 18th century.
The face, slightly turned to the right, with a halo of curls falling on the bare shoulders, presents a modelling of the face and a look that one would believe to be alive, denoting the personal technique of Houdon.

We are on a molding of the end of the eighteenth century, practice exercised by Houdon himself within his workshop and which will grow in the nineteenth.

Nice patina of the statue and to point out, a small chip on the marble pedestal (photo) but very little visible. This does not detract from the quality of the whole.
