*Classified by Hervouët as "exceptional, remarkable from every point of view, and only a few examples are known in the world.
Traditionally, this plate's central design is called "Peter and the Wolf" and the motif is, in fact, taken from an engraving by the German engraver and cartographer Pieter Schenk (1660-1718), who included the title "Petrus de Wolff Petr. Fil" ont his print. Schenk adapted his imagefrom a mezzotint by John Smith (1652-1743) published in the London Gazette of August 19-23, 1686. In turn, Smith's print is a reverse image after William Wissing's 1686 portrait of the 12-year-old John Cecil, 6th earl of Exeter, later Lord Burghley (1674-1721) of Burghley House. A Dutch portrait artist who studied under Sir Peter Lely (1618-80), Wissing (1656-87)painted portraits of many members of the English court and died at Burghley House. The print's title is included below the figure in the marli on the Museum's plate thus confirmong the original print source used. Additionally, Schenk incorporated a neaclassical building and changed the figure's hairstyle, and both these elements appear on the plate but not in other versions of this image.
