The present sculpture, probably the fragment of a retable from around the year 1500, depicts Christ at the Column. The characteristic style of the present sculpture suggests a possible origin among the guilds of Antwerp where the city was approaching its zenith as the leading mercantile center of Europe, ripe with commissions and a culture of affluence and prosperity.
The present sculpture, rigorously carved in oak and embellished with a refined chisel, gives expression to Christ’s trial at the hand of the Roman punitive system. The work borders both realism and abstraction, grace and despair.
