In this painting by De Bruycker we can see three pink roses in bloom, carefully placed in a crystal vase along with two white roses. Two purple and white viola’s are laying beside the crystal vase, along with dainty small white flowers.
Francois Antoine De Bruycker was born in Ghent 1816 and was mainly known for his genre and still life paintings. He was a pupil of Ferdinand de Braekeleer in Antwerp.
In 1845 he won a gold medal in Brussels for the painting “The Lace Maker”. From 1851 to 1868 he took part in the Paris Salon. He contributed to the Antwerp Salon in 1861 and 1864. He was also represented at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878.
His painting "The Suspicion" was acquired in 1842 by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg. "The old gardener" was bought in 1857 by the Grand Duchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach Maria Pawlowna.
