Lady of Sorrows - 17th Century Naples

Old oil painting on canvas representing Our Lady of Sorrows with contemporary frame in gilded and carved wood. Although visibly large, the work is still readable in its iconographic structure and in its compositional characteristics. The iconography is the conventional one of the "Virgin of Sorrows", so widespread in the devotional images of Neapolitan figurative culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. The painting is distinguished by the great expressive power of the face, by the pictorial quality which is revealed by the loose freedom of the brushstroke, rich in impasto, and by the chromatic intensity.
