Oil on panel
Signed lower left: "Th. De Heuvel."
In this picture we can see a woman seated on a stool, next to a woven basket full of greens, carrots and turnips. She is pictured while carefully painting potatoes. In the back we can see two people standing by a door, presumably discussing the working woman.
Théodore Bernard de Heuvel was a Belgian painter of portraits with a preference for genre pieces. He often depicted village scenes, school and games or interiors with family events. De Heuvel received his artistic education from Joseph Geirnaert, a specialist in historical painting, at the Royal Academy in Ghent. In 1840 he left for France, where he spent time in Paris and also travelled throughout the province of Brittany where he undoubtedly sought inspiration in the pleasures of rural life. He returned to Ghent in 1850 before settling in Brussels.
