In this painting we can see a woman holding her daughter on her shoulder,at their feet a black and white dog looks ready to play with the pair. Beside them the table is set with a loaf of bread, a big brown pot and a brown jug.
Jan Walraven was born in 1827 in Amsterdam, where he also worked until 1863, after that he moved to Brussels. He is mainly known as a painter of historical scenes and genre pieces with children. Walraven preferred to depict children of peasants with glowing curls and red cheeks, engaged in mundane activities with animals.
