"Roman Girl at the Fountain", oil on mahogany panel, signed and located P.VAN BREE ROME. After 1821.
Born in Antwerp in 1786, brother and pupil of Mathieu Ignace his older brother, he became known for his historical paintings which he exhibited in various shows.He left Antwerp for Paris, where his master was the painter Girodet. He exhibited a " Rubens painting Marie de Médicis, widow of Henri IV " at the Paris Salon. This painting will be bought by King Louis XVIII and will appear in the Museum of Fine Arts in Cambrai.
In 1816, the painter left for Rome, accompanied by Louis Ricquier (1792-1884), where he stayed for two years.
From 1821, he will reside ten years in Italy.
His painting reflects an Ingresque realism, similar to that of Joseph Navez (1787-1869).
