Pair of Oil Lamp, Baroque Murano Glass

Rare pair of Venetian oil lamp of Baroque period, 17th century.

The fascinating history of Murano glass begins in 1291, when Venice decides to move all the glassware on the island to control and keep the art of the master glassmakers who had already made it famous. Murano’s glass art reached its peak in the 17th century, in the Baroque era, thanks to the discovery of new colours and the ingenious imagination of the master glassmakers, who made decorative glasses with ever more complex shapes.
Typical of this period are the oil lamps, in the shape of horse or animal, with the mouths for the wick shaped as tails, inspired by those of the Roman era.  The body is blown with cloth, slightly strangled in the center, to which they are attached during the work four legs "pulled with the tongs"; also on the head ears and snout are made with tongs; the tail takes the form of a funnel through which the wick is inserted inside the lamp. A button is visible on the chest, the fastening of the "pontello" being cut to finish work.
The colours of these two lamps, cobalt blue and ruby red, are also typical of the Baroque period.

The lamps are in perfect condition. These are rare objects, either because of their fragility or because of the limited number of copies produced; a model of this type is exhibited at the Glass Museum in Venice.
