Jacques van der Wyhen was one of those many Dutch painters of Flemish origin who had fled with his parents, when still a young child, from Flanders to Holland: they ran away from the Spanish, Catholic oppression of Protestants.
In Amsterdam he studied under two important masters, who also had the same Flemish background. This explains the strongly Flemish style of our painting, though painted in the Dutch metropolis, be it under the influence of his second Master, David Vinckboons.
