Oil on panel
Signed lower right. "H. Koekkoek"

Hermanus was a 19th century painter from the Northern Netherlands. Although he painted landscapes, he is primarily known for his seascapes. He worked in a typical romantic-realistic style, which also characterizes the works of his family. Influences from the 17th century are also clearly visible in his work.
These two paintings show two contrasting seas, a calmer and serene sea with white clouds countering the stormy waves and dark clouds of the other one.
