Oil on canvas
Signed lower left: "E. J. Verboeckhoven, F. 1829."
In this painting we can see a strong brown bull, standing in a puddle. On the lower left side of the painting we can spot a family of ducks making a run for it, visibly spooked by the appearance of the bull.
Eugène Verboeckhoven was a Belgian painter, specializing in scenes with cattle, horses and wild animals. His style was rooted in the Northern and Southern Netherlandish tradition of animal painting from the 17th and 18th century. He adopted the styles of artists like Paulus Potter and Aelbert Cuyp, but integrated this with contemporary accents on his shepherds, travellers and decor.
