Oil on canvas
Signed lower left: "Henry Schouten."
Henri Schouten was a Belgian painter, mainly known for his animal and landscape paintings. He sometimes used the pseudonym ‘Joseph Klaas.’
He received his education at the Academy of Brussels and experienced a big influence of the animal painter Alfred Verwee.
Henri Schouten was primarily a realistic painter of animals: cows, sheep, horses, chickens and others. He also painted farmers, shepherds, hunters with their dogs or a drinking horse seller. Sometimes he painted still lifes with flowers, birds, fruits or still lifes with fish and shrimp.
In this painting of Schouten we can see a woman clad in a blue skirt and a white blouse being carried by a black and white donkey. A white donkey is walking closely beside the two, followed by a brown dog. The dog is looking in the direction of the see, spotting something that has caught his attention.
