Oil on copperAdriaen van Stalbemt was a Flemish painter and printmaker who is known for his landscapes with religious, mythological and allegorical scenes. He was also a gifted figure painter who was regularly invited to paint the staffage in compositions of fellow painters. His artistic work is fully committed to the tradition of the older Flemish school. Some of his subjects, such as landscapes, can certainly be compared with those of Hendrik van Balen The Elder (1575-1632).In this painting we can see Diana and her Nymphs bathing by a fountain. The fountain is placed in a brown stone niche in the background, where the water flows into the basin from the jug of a sculptured river god. Two winged putti are floating above a group of nude nymphs, who are sitting and standing around the water. In the middle of the painting the viewer gets a look through a wooded landscape under a blue sky. Here we can see Actaeon, who has accidentally seen naked nymphs and goddess. Because of this, Diana has transformed him into a deer. This transformation is already starting, judging by the growing horns on his head. This is a painting of high quality, in which the light incarnates of the nymphs are particularly emphasized against the otherwise dark background.
