Large limestone head of an abbess, veiled, with a small trefoil on her hood, resting on a pillow. This carving would originally have been displayed horizontally, as it was part of a large funerary monument or so-called “gisant”.
Hainaut. Early 14th century.
Provenance: private collection of mr. J. D. (Brussels), acquired by the latter from the private collection of the belgian writer Henri Vernes, pseudonym for Charles-Henri Dewisme (°Ath, October 16th 1918 - + Brussels July 25th 2021).
