Lit: Floris De Cuyper, the last of a family of five children, works for some time in the glass industry and in this father's mirror workshop. He learned sculpture at Jozef Van Ostayen's studio in Borgerhout, and studied with sculptors Alfons Van Beurden, Frans Deckers and Jan Kerckx at the Antwerp Academy. He learns to carve marble in the workshop of Frans Joris. Student of the sculptor Thomas Vinçotte at the Higher Institute of Antwerp, he worked, thanks to a scholarship, a few months at the master Gérome’s, at the School of Fine Arts in Paris (1899). 2nd “Prix de Rome” in 1900, he settles as an independent artist a year later. He uses many materials (marble, stone, ivory, wood, gold), portrait sculptor and, medalist, he does not follow fashion and works in his own way. In 1924 he became professor at the Antwerp Academy and in 1932 he founds the school of drawing of Mortsel with Alfred Bouchery. Will receive many distinctions. Remarkable work: bust of his wife in white marble at the Antwerp Museum, “Somnolent Land” (1928) and “Rest” (1902) at the Mortsel Museum. War memorials of Turnhout, Wijnegem, Mol (1921), Glons (1923) and Mortsel (1925).
