Gerard Portielje is one of the most significant romantic Belgian painters of interiors.
He was the son of Jan Portielje, born in Amsterdam, but he moved towards Antwerp. He had two sons, both painters.
Edward and Gerard Portielje.
He is a master in reflection of emotions....also in details he is sublime.
Our painting is typical for the artist, he made a few paintings with school teachers and students, such as also Ferdinand de Braekeleer and Basile de Loose did.
Also painters active in Antwerp and Brussels.
The theme is of all times....a boy is punished and has to stay after school hours. He falls asleep on his desk. The teacher brings him a sandwich and some water or milk.
This painting is a reminder of how classes looked like in the 19th century...accurate in all details.....
It is housed in his original frame...a very rich and beautiful frame.
Our painting is also with a photo reproduced in 2 books of the romantic painters in Belgium. Both in the catalogue raissoné of Berko fine paintings and in the monography of the family Portielje. The painting is in a perfect condition.
The size of the frame included is 57 x64 cm
The painting is signed lower right.
