Wooden Crosses

Three Carved Wooden Crosses B-20
Northern Russia, 17th and 18th century,
17.5 x 8.5 cm / 16 x 9.7 cm / 17 x 8.6 cm

These three well-preserved crosses are fine examples of the varied crosses carved by Old Believers in northern Russia during the 17th and 18th centuries, especially in the Archangelsk and Volodga regions. The crosses were mainly carved by monks in monasteries and were used for different purposes. They can be found set into the large three-bar orthodox crosses, which were traditionally used for Old Believers graveyards.
