Pope Pius V

Pope Pius V, born Antonio (in religion Michele) Ghislieri (Bosco Marengo, January 17, 1504 - Rome, May 1, 1572), was the 225th bishop of Rome and pope of the Catholic Church, sovereign of the papal state, in addition in other proper titles of the Roman pontiff, from 7 January 1566 to his death. Dominican theologian and inquisitor, he worked for the reform of the Church according to the precepts of the Council of Trent. Together with St. Charles Borromeo and St. Ignatius of Loyola, he is considered one of the main architects and promoters of the Counter-Reformation and the Catholic Reformation. During his pontificate the new Roman Missal, the Breviary and the Catechism were published, revisions of the Vulgate and Corpus Iuris Canonici were undertaken. oil on canvas, Louis XV period.
