Beautiful pair of views of Mediterranean ports, adorned with ruins, figures dressed in antiquity and sailing vessels.

Very nice intensity with a gradient going from the deepest black to the brightest white.

Good condition, original canvas and stretcher.

Provence around 1800.

Our opinion :

Halfway between the classic navy inherited from the works of the painter Joseph Vernet (1714-1789) and the architectural perspectives inspired by the works of Hubert Robert (1733-1808), our pair of canvases is characteristic of the Provençal productions of the end of the 18th century. century and early 19th.
The grisaille technique and the use of "chiaroscuro" make it possible to obtain a clever illusion of relief, in order to imitate marble bas relief.
This "trompe l'oeil" work of shadow and light will be particularly appreciated in the South of France, in particular to go with the decorations of Plasterwork.
