Penitent Magdalene, baroque sculpture in terracotta, entourage of Giuseppe Maria Mazza (Bologna, 1653-1741).
The composition is developed in the manner of the Bolognese sculptor Giuseppe Maria Mazza, famous for his production of small-format terracotta works with a sacred subject for an intimate and private religiosity.
The iconography is inspired by the golden legend that Magdalene, after the resurrection of Christ, will retire to live in a cave as a penitent until her death.
The composition is interesting for its rarity, given that, in the field of devotion, the most common subject is the Madonna and Child.
