Penitent Magdalene, rare Baroque sculpture in Emilian terracotta, circle of Giuseppe Maria Mazza (Bologna, 1653-1741).
The composition takes up the painting "The Penitent Magdalen" by Guido Reni of 1627 and it is developed in the manner of the Bolognese sculptor Giuseppe Maria Mazza, famous for his production of small format works in terracotta with a sacred subject for an intimate religiosity and private. The iconography is inspired by the golden legend according to which Magdalene, after the resurrection of Christ, will retire to live in a cave as a penitent until her death. The composition is interesting for its rarity, given that, in the field of devotion, the most common subject is the Virgin and Child.
