Signed lower left: "Ch. Van den Eycken,"

Charles van den Eycken was a well known Belgian painter, specializing in pictures of interiors with dogs and cats. Van den Eycken was the son and grandson of painters and was thaught by Joseph Stevens. He exhibited regularly in the Salons of Brussels, Liège, Ghent and Antwerp, as well as in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain.
Painting house pets- both cats and dogs- became very popular during the 19th century. Van den Eycken was quick to introduce himself to the English market for this type of imagery. He exhibited in London often and was widely popular with the British patrons. By the 1980's, van den Eycken had established himself as a leader in this fashionable specialization, and his popularity with collectors continued to expand.
