Besançon, around 1810
One of the specificities of the Tarot known as "de Besançon" is that two of the trumps, the Papess (II) and the Pope (V) are replaced respectively by Juno and Jupiter, undoubtedly to avoid offending religious sensitivities in a distribution area marked by denominational contrasts.
This tarot, published by the German master cartier Jacob Jerger, is the archetypal model bearing the designation "de Besançon". Our copy is in very good condition, the colors of a great freshness, for this first edition.
