Signed and dated lower right: "C.J. Grips, 1862"

On this painting we can see a young mother beside the cradle of her baby painted by Carel Joseph Grips.
Grips was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and engraver. Grips came to Antwerp in 1837 where he studied at the Royal Academy for Fine art. He then became the student of Jan Hendrik van Grootvelt. Grips lived alternating in The Netherlands and in Belgium, in 1881 he finally settled in Vught.
Grips mainly painted genre paintings, specifically kitchen interiors in the style of 17th century painters like Pieter de Hooch.
