Chen Wen Hsi is an avant-garde painter from Singapore. Formerly noticed and collected for his original paintings of gibons or herons, all aspects of his work (lotus ponds, squirrels, Singapore buildings ...) are now prominently featured in the collections of modern Chinese paintings offered in major international sales.. The artist's value, in constant progress since his death in 1991, has recently experienced a meteoric rise which only confirms his singular talent as evidenced by his latest results at Sotheby's Hong Kong, sale of April 19, 2020, lot 792, sold 478.800 HK$ and lot 793 sold for HK$ 504,000.
Our painting, in the same vein as lot n ° 792, is nevertheless more exceptional still by its audacity since it mixes the tradition of Chinese painting in classical black ink by water lilies with completely black leaves with more naturalistic aspects like the polychrome treatment of fishes and the lotus flower in an insolent, eccentric and unique red, the impressionist star no doubt of this very mastered work.
