Southern Netherlandish retabel of Christ being crowned with thorns

A miniature retabel group depicting Christ being crowned with thorns, depicting Christ seated on the cold stone, dressed in a red mantle and holding a birch as scepter, while two soldiers put the crown of thorns on his head. A wall with balustrade and grill window on the background. Various collector's labels and number on the back.

The sculpture is made from a beige clay, retaining the original polychrome colors.

These types of small clay house retables are extremely rare. Because they were so fragile, only a very small number have been preserved.

Southern Netherlands (Mechelen?), mid-16th century.

Dimensions: H 14cm x W 10.8cm x D 3.8cm.

Provenance: ex collection of antique dealer Jan Koldeweij (Helvoirt, NL).

Condition: the sculpture has an old clean repaired break and mostly visible on the back.
