Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (Valenciennes, 1827 - Courbevoie, 1875) made a career as a painter, but always practiced painting. He was also a tireless draughtsman: he filled many notebooks with his sketches taken on the spot, of which the Valenciennes museum, the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris and the Louvre museum have examples. Although the size of our sheet is slightly larger than those of these notebooks, it is an example of Carpeaux's sense of observation and taste for sketching. We can recognize the artist's style with its vibrant contours and pencilled shadows, drawn with parallel or intersecting lines.
