Martinus Rørbye (Drammen, Norway, 1803 - Copenhagen, 1848) was a student at the Copenhagen Academy from 1820 and met Eckersberg in 1825, with whom he became friends. In 1834, he undertook a grand tour that took him to Italy, then to Greece and Turkey. His painting was appreciated very early on and Rørbye was one of the central figures of the Danish Golden Age. As a traveling painter, he was also one of the first to come and paint the seaside landscapes in and around Skagen on the Jutland peninsula. This live sketch shows his visit to the coast in the summer of 1848, shortly before his death. Lønstrup is also known for an oil sketch of a view of the dune (Copenhagen, Hirschprung Collection).
