Limestone Angel in high relief
Spain, 15th century
H 24 x L 27 cm
This beautiful angel in high relief holding a phylactery was probably placed on a ledge, above a religious composition.
The fine feathers grouped in triangular wicks cover the slightly rounded torso and the extended wing.
The hair, in round curls, frames a rounded face with a pronounced nose that shows similarities to the sculpted works of Maestro del Sepulcro del doctor Grado of the Cathedral of Zamora.
The branching creates an elegant play of full and empty that can be found in Spanish works of the 15th century.
