Following the victory at the battle of Austerlitz, the Treaty of Pressburg (Bratislava) in December 1805 definitively bequeathed to Napoleon, represented here by the imperial eagle, the Venetian territory, represented here by the lion of St Mark.
This rare allegorical image of the capture of Venice by the French Empire was most likely produced just after the Treaty of Pressburg, around the year 1806, as imperial propaganda.
