A large blue and white bowl decorated with flowers and birds, six-character mark in Kaishu character in a double circle on the reverse, 17th century, early Kangxi period (1662-1722)
This unusual mark Shen De Tang Bo Gu Zhi ("Made in the Antique style for the Hall (Palace) of the cultivation (development) of virtue") is attested on a very small number of Minyao ceramics of literate taste from the Transition period. However by its style which is both different from the Chongzhen blue and white and the 5-color Shunzhi wucai, it is arguably more in line with the very beginnings of Kangxi production in the 17th century. This seems to be confirmed by the fact that the building designated by this mark was inaugurated under Kangxi reign on the site of the Yuan Ming Yuan, the Summer Palace in Beijing, before being much later resuscitated again for pieces of literate taste under the Daoguang reign with the abbreviated term of Shende Tang Zhi ("Hall of Cultivation of Virtue").
