Portrait of a child with a lace bonnet - Flemish School of the 16th century

Workshop of Gortzius Geldorp (1553-1616)

Oil on oak parquet panel
Flemish style frame in red tortoiseshell
Dimensions with frame: 52 x 47 cm. The panel alone: 37 x 32 cm

Gortzius Geldorp, was born in 1553 in Leuven and died in 1616 in Cologne. A Flemish history painter and portraitist, he was trained in the studio of Frans Francken I and later Frans Pourbus the Elder (a leading portrait painter in Flanders). Both Frans Francken I and Frans Pourbus the Elder were students of Frans Floris, the leading Renaissance painter in Antwerp.
Geldorp was court painter to the Duke of Terra Nova, Carlo d'Aragona Tagliavia, whom he accompanied on his travels. He traveled to Cologne with the Duke, who was participating in the peace negotiations with the Dutch Republic. Geldorp stayed in the city while remaining a companion of the Duke during his travels. He became a successful portraitist with many commissions from the aristocracy and prominent patrons.

Nice state of preservation.
